Story

For those of you who don’t know. We (Dom, Rob and Jon) work for Revolution Bars group PLC. With their support we have undertaken a slightly insane idea. What is this… to cycle to every Bar in Dom’s area of Revolucion de Cuba bars. Cardiff, Reading, Milton Keynes, Norwich, Nottingham, Derby, Belfast and back to Cardiff. In a loop starting in Cardiff and ending in Cardiff covering roughly 900 miles.

Like all great adventures again, this one started as passing joke.
‘Dom your area is massive’
‘Wouldn’t it be great to cycle to all the bars, instead to driving?’
‘Yes, it would!’
And so it began… Our Vuelta a Revolucion de Cuba (south)

As the idea started to grow, we began to imagine our own (mini) Grand Tour, with all the prestige of the Tour de France, the romance of the Giro d’Italia and the passion of the Vuelta a España. It turns out our first stop will be Reading, closely followed by Milton Keynes and then a spin up the A11 to Norwich! But, it isn’t all bad! The highlight will most definitely be the Irish east coast, Belfast to Rosslare and Ireland in all its green glory. And then there is South Wales, Pembrokeshire, the Gower and award winning beaches. Not to mention the picturesque and beautiful villages of the Cotswolds and Cheshire. Actually who needs prestige, romance and passion, when you’re British.

Also when it came to distance and the miles (or Kms if you’re a cyclist), we really wanted this trip to replicate our heroes of the road and to match their incredible efforts and achievements. So (rather stupidly) we have decided to average 200kms a day! Which when we looked into it is actually 40kms more than the average Tour de France day (let’s not mention the extremely large mountains these athletes cross and the fact they do it for 21 days). But all jokes aside this is by far the toughest cycle any of the three of us have even undertaken and if we are honest, we can’t f******wait!

So that explains a little bit about how we came up with our own mini Tour. Once we had decided we were all game for doing something stupid, we thought – Lets make sure we do this for a good cause! Use our own insanity for good. It took us little time to settle on a brilliant charity to support – Ty Hafan. Dom’s wife Natalie is a Doctor and has seen first-hand the amazing work the children’s hospice carry out, and as soon as we started to read and understand the brilliant support they provide to so many children and their families – our mind was set. Let’s punish our bodies and slog around England, Wales and Ireland on bikes in a hope that some people will support our efforts and donate to Ty Hafan. I also know anyone who takes the time to read about the work Ty Hafan do will know what a worthwhile cause this is.

As the launch date looms, we have all been out in all weathers trying to get ourselves ready for our 900 mile jaunt (will we ever be truly ready?). Joins us and follow us as we toil, suffer, laugh, cry and sweat it out on our bikes as we are lucky enough to have the choice to do so.

Sadly, thousands of families in Wales live every day knowing their child’s life will be short. At the moment, they often face this without any care or support. Alone. Afraid. Isolated. Tŷ Hafan’s ambition is that when a child’s life will be short, no family should have to live it on their own.
