Why I am doing this

5 years ago my friend (Mo) lost her mum (Lyn) to Cancer after 9 years of battling against it. She sadly spent her final days at the Macmillan Unit in Christchurch but because of the charity Macmillan Caring Locally, this not just a hospital ward. It's a comfortable cosy place where family and friends can spend time with their loved ones. They can share a meal or have a drink together. Families can even stay the night in one of the guest rooms. There is a beautiful garden where you can enjoy the sunshine or even have a cigarette. Mo and her husband Chris (fiancé at the time) were able to spend precious time with Lyn which certainly would not have been possible if this was a usual hospital. Mo remembers having such a good laugh with her mum and Chris playing a game of scrabble. Mo was pregnant at the time of her mums death and despite everyone being convinced she was having a boy, Lyn was adamant she would have a girl and she was right! Little Indi came along and Lyn lives on in her.

More sadness came for Chris and his family when he and his sisters Lucy and Lisa's were told both their parents had Cancer.  Their mum (Net) sadly passed away in May of this year just a short time after being diagnosed and quite unbelievably their Dad (Bern) passed away 3 months to the day after Net. Both benefited from the care of the Macmillan Unit. The setup at the Macmillan Unit made it easy for the Lucy, Chris and Lisa and their partners together with their children the "extended family" to visit. Net and Bern's Grandchildren, Indi and Alfie, could spend time in the day room with "Nana" where there's a host of toys to play with! Bern never made it to the Macmillan Unit and sadly passed away whilst travelling there but even so Macmillan still provided such great support to Bern whilst at home.

I am doing this because I want to make sure that Macmillan Caring Locally have the funds they need to help other families get through such difficult times in the same way they helped Mo, Lucy, Chris and Lisa.
