We are devastated to see the scenes and hear the news coming out of Beirut. Over 100 people are estimated to have been killed and over 4,000 injured. Whole neighbourhoods have been turned to rubble, with 300,000 people suddenly made homeless.

Human Appeal informed us that they know from their work in Lebanon that people are already suffering from widespread economic collapse and poverty, and that the already stretched healthcare infrastructure is struggling to cope with an influx of COVID-19 patients as the pandemic has begun to take hold.

A number of hospitals were damaged directly by the explosion, and others are so overwhelmed that they are telling people with non-life threatening injuries to stay at home. Makeshift morgues are also being set up due to a lack of capacity at hospitals.

People in Beirut desperately need aid and shelter to help them cope with this latest disaster that has hit Lebanon.
