Tour d'Afrique · 3 March 2016

We collect used bicycles in the UK and we ship them, in containers, to people who need them in Africa. Some people living in rural African communities walk miles everyday to reach water, school, work or healthcare. Bikes are a sustainable mode of transport and help change lives for many families.

Story

Back on 15th January, 20 plus intrepid riders left Cairo at the foot of the Pyramids embarking on a 4 month pedal south to Cape Town. 12,000 kilometres away taking in 10 countries, they are all on a voyage of discovery and a unique opportunity to savour African life on a day by day basis, from the saddle of a bicycle:

Some riders will leave at different stages en route and others like myself will join in along the way to complete sections, many will complete the whole tour and with luck be able to retain the illusive EFI (pedal Every F***ing Inch!).

From watching the first ‘You Tube’ clips of previous tours and hearing the narrator say, "I encourage anyone who thinks they can't do it, to give it a try!!" I have been hooked:

I join up with main group on April 15th in Livingstone, Zambia and will pedal through Zambia, Botswana, Namibia and into South Africa ending up in Cape Town on 14th May. If I do not get lost, it should amount to 3500 kilometres with a few bumps thrown in and quite possibly the odd tumble!

As part of this endeavour it would be great to raise some Charity funds and given that the bicycle is such a huge asset in African life I have teamed up with ‘Re-cycle (Bikes to Africa)’.

Re-Cycle have a network that allows them to capitalise on taking our unwanted UK bikes and bulk shipping them to partner organisations across Africa, to begin a new life as family, medical, educational and commercial transport. In 2015 Re-Cycle shipped 12,500 formally redundant bikes to the continent, creating a new found benefit to 1000’s ........

P.S. and remember that every donation gets a little more money from HMRC, how bad can that be ...
