Story
The YMCA of Greater Houston is committed to providing opportunities for individuals of all ages and families to learn, grow and thrive, no matter their circumstances.
You often hear about organizations making a difference in the community, and I have been blessed to experience the difference personally and bless others with Y opportunities. It starts with relationships and being a part of one another's growth journey.
Here is my Y story; it starts 37 years ago when I learned how to swim. My mom registered me for swim lessons as she is a nurse and understands the importance of this vital skill. I have used this skill multiple times in my life.
Eventually, I started my first job at the Y. I learned professionalism, built relationships with staff and members, and was surrounded by a community of support. Two years later, I met my husband at the Y. He worked in the sports department and swished his way into my life. To make a long story short, we got married and had the perfect baby boy for us.
Bradley, our son, has participated in Y programs such as swim, basketball, soccer, baseball, camp, and more. These are the traditional Y programs. They are fantastic and taught Bradley character traits. However, the important difference the Y has made is him feeling loved, welcomed, and a part of a family while being so far away from the rest of his family.
The Y makes a difference in big and small ways. Somedays, it may seem like a small difference that you realize years later, was the most significant difference in your life. Please help the Y make a difference.
