Story

Cancer has been a constant, unwelcome presence is my life for many years now. In particular, my dad experienced a devastating cancer diagnosis that meant many years of his life were spent in treatment and medical trials. Thankfully he, like Ceinwen, beat the odds and came through the other side of it.

When Ceinwen was in recovery after months of horrific treatment, she realised that there was very little support available for young adults with cancer. There is a lot of support for older people and for kids, but somehow people in their 20s, 30s, and 40s were forgotten. No one was talking about the specific issues of this group: balancing your career with cancer treatment, dating with cancer, having children after cancer, etc. So, instead of trying to put her whole ordeal behind her, she decided to make a difference. She created an incredible organisation that offers the support that she couldn't find.

Running Shine Cancer Support is a hard job that causes her to look cancer directly in the face every day. She has lost a lot of amazing people along the way but, more importantly, she has made a massive difference in the lives of hundreds of people.

Please support this incredible organisation.

Here is Ceinwen's story:

"Ten years ago I was diagnosed with stage 4 non-Hodgkin lymphoma. I had a six week old premature baby and was told my chances of surviving the next two years were 40%.

I'm incredibly thankful to be here 10 years later and especially grateful that, through Shine, I've been able to work with young adults with cancer across the UK.30,000 adults aged 25 to 49 are diagnosed with cancer every year. That's 10 times the number of children and teenagers but this group gets very little specific attention or support - despite a lot of specific needs related to mental health, fertility, work, and family.Since 2012, we've been working to change that and Shine Cancer Support is the only charity in the UK that focuses on those in their 20s, 30s or 40s who are diagnosed with cancer.

Shine does amazing work on a tiny budget and it would be great to raise some much needed funds and ensure that Shine can support more young adults with cancer than ever before."

Shine supports adults in their 20s, 30s and 40s who have experienced a cancer diagnosis. Too old for children and teenage services but too young for traditional cancer support, we support the people who fall into a devastating cancer support gap.
