Fundraising for Worldwide Cancer Research
Story
Running was a hobby of mine for many years. Something I would do at the weekends to switch off. That was until I was faced with a devastating blow in December 2016 when my father was diagnosed with Oesophagus cancer. Sadly within weeks of the diagnosis we were told nothing else could be done. In May 2017 Dad passed away peacefully at home. The cancer had spread so quickly and robbed him, like many others of time & life he still had to live. Running suddenly became my way of dealing with the guilt, the anger, the sadness. Running helped me focus my thoughts and keep my mind healthy.
Whilst reflecting on my Father's life we remembered that he had completed the London Marathon in 1983 with a finish time of 4 hours and 19mins. It suddenly dawned on me that I needed to run the marathon in his memory. I had to make this my goal. My running had to mean something and contribute to a greater cause.
I looked at various Cancer charities to represent but Worldwide Cancer research stood out to me for personal reasons. I learned that they currently have a study underway in Belgium to further understand oesophagus cancer. More than 8,500 new cases of Oesophageal cancer are diagnosed in the UK every year. That means over 23 people receive a diagnosis everyday. This is why such research is vital.
I have a target of £2,200 to raise and have set myself the personal goal of completing the marathon in a time close to 4 hours. I will be taking part in many running events over the next few months leading up to the London Marathon. I'll also be filling my calendar with various events aiming to complete 10k's or half marathon on a monthly basis.
Confirmed events are as follows: 14/10/18 Royal Welsh Run. 04/11/18 Richard Burton 10K. 10/02/19 Llanelli Half Marathon. 03/03/19 Newport Half Marathon. 14/04/19 Great Welsh Half Marathon. 28/04/19 LONDON MARATHON. 23/06/19 Swansea Half Marathon.
