Story
As most of you know, I have fought Pneumococcal Meningitis 5 times spanning over 30 years!
My life has been engulfed by this life changing disease and its after effects. It unfortunately has formed my life and made me who I am today but I continue to not be defeated by it. I have had invaluable support from my family and friends, but also Meningitis Now too.
I am taking on this 21 mile challenge, spanning over a month, as 21 people contract meningitis every single day and I think more awareness is needed. Its going to be a stroll that is fun and an enjoyable way to simply be with my family and friends, whilst raising money for the vital work that Meningitis Now does.
Key facts:
- meningitis can affect anyone of any age
- meningitis can kill
- meningitis can cause long-term after effects
- viral and bacterial are the most common causes of meningitis
- no vaccine provides 100% protection against meningitis
- early signs and symptoms can appear similar to 'flu' or a stomach bug
Meningitis Now faces their biggest ever challenge. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a huge impact on all our lives. One thing that has been significantly affected is fundraising and this is very much the case at Meningitis Now. With events cancelled and much of their usual fundraising unable to happen as normal, they face a big drop in their income. Simply put, they don't have enough money to continue all their vital work funding research, raising awareness and providing support for those affected by meningitis.
Meningitis Now has been proud to be there for people as they have faced what is for many, is their biggest challenge. I am taking on the challenge of the Fabulous Virtual Walk to help them continue to save lives and rebuild futures.
