Story
It all really started in October 2015 when dad had a chest drain inserted after a biopsy. The drain remained in and we managed it at home, dad seemed well and life continued as normal and on Christmas Eve 2015 dad received the news he wished for and the biopsy results were negative, he said that was the best Christmas present he could ever have asked for. Easter 2016 dad became feverish and unwell he was taken to hospital and diagnosed with pneumonia he commenced on IV antibiotics but he wasn't improving. He was transferred back to the hospital where he had originally had the drain inserted and they ran further cytology tests. He was diagnosed with having contracted VRE (a hospital acquired infection similar to MRSA) he was put on stronger antibiotics and he seemed to improve. He came home but it wasn't long before his condition deteriorated again, so he went back to hospital for further IV antibiotics. In between all of this he was being seen by two main consultants, a chest physician and a specialist oncologist at a hospital that has excellent resources. Dad had regular consultations with them and they still could not tell us what was the primary cause of his ill health and the plan was to aggressively treat the infection present in his lung. It wasn't until he developed a lump under his left arm and had a CT scan as an inpatient in hospital that we received the news we had all dreaded. We were told on Wednesday 27th July 2016 he was terminal and he had weeks to months rather than months to years, there were no treatment options for him. Dad's decision was to be at home for the rest of his days, so that's what we did. He came home on Saturday 30th July 2016 at 6.40pm. He was brave and courageous but he sadly lost his battle and passed away on Monday 1 August 2016 at 6.45 am with his wife Evelyn (our amazing mum) beside him.
