People often ask, "Why Rhino's?" Perhaps some background will help:
- Rhinos have been around for 25-40 MILLION years. 30 years ago, the total world Rhino population numbered 500,000 individuals, yet today less than 18,000 remain.
- 4 of the 5 of species are critically endangered: there are only 60 Jarvan Rhinos and 300 Sumatran Rhinos
- The 2400 Indian Rhinos are principally confined to 3 National Parks:
- The 3100 Black Rhinos could be extinct within 30 years according to a recent UN report. (1 of the Black Rhinos sub-species, Diceros Bicornis Longipes, found on Cameroon has only 10-15 animals surviving.)
- Even the White Rhino, bought back from the verge of extinction at the beginning of the 20th centurary and now numbering 11700, is classified as "conservation dependent" (The Northern White sub-species, Ceratotherium Simum Cottoni, found in the democratic Republic of Congo, numbers only 30 individuals and is crittically endangered.)
- We have killed Rhinos for the horn, used for ornamental dagger handles in Yemen and for traditional medicine in Asia...and we have destroyed the habitat in which Rhinos live. In doing so we have also lost other flora and fauna sharing the same habitat.
So, why Rhinos? Try these Rhinos for size:
- Ecological. Saving the Rhino means saving large tracts of habitat and therefore entire eco-systems, together with co dependant species.
- Economic. By saving Rhinos and their habitat, we can avoid environmental degradation and offer instead opportunities for sustainable utilisation by local communities.
- Ethical. Just one threat has bought Rhinos to the brink of extinction. Man. Its our responsibility to save them.
AND ITS NOT TOO LATE TO SAVE THE RHINO!!!!!
