Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Pamela will be undertaking a "trio of events" in 2017 and 2018, culminating with the Marathon Des Sables in 2018.

Pamela has already successfully completed the London Marathon in April 2017 and will compete in another marathon or triathlon event before MDS.

Michael will also undertake a "trio of events" in 2017 and 2018, with MDS 2018 the pinnacle.

In August 2017, Michael completed an "everesting" of Toys Hill in Brasted, Kent which included 63 repetitions over a 25-hour period to achieve the height of Everest (8848m). Michael achieved 9006m.

In September 2017, Michael battled cold weather and fog to complete Revolve 24, a 24-hour solo endurance cycling event at Brands Hatch, registering just over 400km.

GOSH is very personal to us…

In the summer of 2010 our daughter was diagnosed with Cushings and spent a number of months under the care of Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. After a successful operation to remove a large tumour, Sophie was released and returned home the day before her second birthday. We will be forever grateful to GOSH, its staff and the care provided to Sophie, with special mention going to Dr Caroline Brain from the Endocrinology unit.

Throughout its long history, Great Ormond Street Hospital has always relied on public support, even after the founding of the NHS in 1948. Their mission as a charity is to raise money to enable the hospital to continue to provide the very best care for its young patients and their families.

The support from the charity is concentrated in four main areas ‑ redevelopment, research, medical equipment, and accommodation and welfare.

ABOUT CUSHING'S

http://csrf.net/

Cushing's syndrome is a collection of signs and symptoms due to prolonged exposure to cortisol. Signs and symptoms may include: high blood pressure, abdominal obesity but with thin arms and legs, reddish stretch marks, a round red face, a fat lump between the shoulders, weak muscles, weak bones, acne, and fragile skin that heals poorly. Women may have more hair and irregular menstruation. Occasionally there may be changes in mood, headaches, and a chronic feeling of tiredness.

Cushing's syndrome is caused by either excessive cortisol-like medication such as prednisone or a tumour that either produces or results in the production of excessive cortisol by the adrenal glands… this is what our Sophie had.

About two to three people per million are affected each year. It most commonly affects people who are 20 to 50 years of age. Women are affected three times more often than men. Cushing's syndrome was first described by Harvey Cushing in 1932.

Cushing’s Syndrome in Children

  • The incidence of endogenous Cushing’s syndrome is approximately 2 to 5 new cases per million people per year, and approximately 10% of these new cases occur in children.
  • The most common cause of endogenous Cushing’s syndrome in children is an ACTH-secreting pituitary adenoma (accounts for approximately 75% of all cases of endogenous Cushing’s syndrome in children older than 7 years)
  • The most common cause of Cushing’s syndrome in infants and toddlers is an adrenal tumour (adenoma, carcinoma, or bilateral hyperplasia).
