Abbie's Army has been formed in loving memory of Abbie Mifsud by her family. She was a remarkable daughter and brave little girl who on September 13th 2011, at only 6 years of age lost her fight with an inoperable and incurable (DIPG) brain tumour.
This is the MOST FATAL form of childhood brain cancer growing in the brainstem making surgery impossible. 'Terminal at diagnosis' there is NO treatment or CURE. The only standard UK treatment is 6 weeks of palliative radiotherapy to relieve symptoms before the tumour returns more aggressively.
The median survival is just 8-12 months.
Abbie passed away only 5 months after her initial diagnosis. Can you imagine? the most fatal cancer with the least to be done?...
Our mission now is to RAISE awareness and contribute much needed funds for children's DIPG brain tumour research which is currently woefully underfunded. DIPG affects 40 children a year in the UK with most funding coming from the parent led charities who have all lost a child to the disease. It may be too late to help our beautiful girl but we can all commit to helping the DIPG families of the future.
ANY donation that can aid research and the development of new treatments for these children, who currently have NONE that are proven effective, is extremely worthwhile. These children are waiting for science , but they do not have the luxury of time. Only investment to find a cure will provide the hope they need and give them a future.
EVERY 9 DAYS A CHILD IN THE UK IS DIAGNOSED WITH DIPG.
From LOSS there is HOPE and INSPIRATION.
1 CHILD DIES EVERY 3 DAYS FROM A BRAIN TUMOUR IN THE UK.
Many thanks
Michael Pettit
