Story

Thanks for supporting my fundraising. I’m doing the Thames Path Mighty Hike (26 miles) not only to raise funds for Macmillan but also to remember two very special people, Nora Neve and Ashley Gauton.

Ashley was a colleague and a best friend. The sort of friend that you can call after 18m of radio silence and pick up right where you left off. We had been friends for more than 30 years. In 2019 he fought acute myeloid leukaemia, a form of cancer that my Mum had also known. Ashley was probably the healthiest person I knew. He ate well, exercised a lot, didn’t drink or smoke which made the diagnosis puzzling and particularly cruel. Ashley passed on in the late summer of 2020.

We worked together on many occasions starting with Tucker Fasteners and Dynapert Precima, both organisations within the Emhart Corporation at the time. He was a force of nature at work as colleagues from Yardley Lentheric, Thomson International Publishing and MTV Networks will agree. He led from the front but always made time for a chat or discussion and was open to different ideas. As a leader he wanted to get the best out his team and see them develop.

In our last roles as a team, only a couple of years ago, I was privileged to support him at Outset LLP.

Outside work he was an avid reader, interested in everything from the cinema to lexicography and not to mention the Baggies! He was always ready to lend an ear or a practical hand. Usually he had a funny story to tell and unusually he was a keen listener, ready with an intelligent and a perceptive line of questioning. He was inspirational but most of all, I will remember the laughter and the fun he brought into a room.

I signed on to this walk in January because I wanted to honour and remember Ashley. When I last met him, he gave me a pair of trail trainers that are perfectly suited to this walk. You could say that I’ll be walking in his footsteps.

Anything that you could give to support Macmillan provide vital end of life care will be gratefully received.
