Story
I’m running Brighton Half Marathon for RISE, a Brighton-based charity providing vital support for those whose lives are at risk from domestic violence and abuse. RISE is an incredible service offering practical help ranging from direct advice to refuge accommodation.
RISE have actively responded to transphobia in the media, ensuring that their inclusive services are visible and accessible to trans people. Their LGB&T* service for survivors of domestic abuse was the first in England, and RISE provide one of the few dedicated LGBT refuge and support services.
We know that:
On average two women are killed by their partner or ex-partner every week in England and Wales. (ONS, 2018)
More than a quarter (28 per cent) of trans people in a relationship in the last year have faced domestic abuse from a partner. (Stonewall, LGBT in Britain- Trans Report 2017)
Overall, more than one in ten LGBT people (11 per cent) have faced domestic abuse from a partner in the last year. (Stonewall, LGBT in Britain- Home and Communities 2018)
Domestic violence is prevalent across communities, yet it is an issue that remains deeply stigmatised. Domestic violence doesn’t always leave a visible mark and can happen to anyone. It is a pattern of behaviour. It isn’t always violent, but it is always coercive and controlling.
Everyone should be supported to live free from domestic violence. RISE’s inclusive services are saving lives, please donate to help ensure that they can continue to help people thrive!
