We are fighting to make a world where diabetes does no harm

Story

Hello. I’d like you to meet Harry Quick. Harry is a very brave little boy and he is the reason I am running 2 marathons in 8 days. Harry is in my daughter Molly’s class at school and his parents have asked me if I would consider raising some much needed funds for Diabetes UK.

Harry is a type 1 diabetic. For those that do not know what this means, Harry’s immune system attacks and destroys the cells that produce insulin. Insulin helps our bodies use glucose for energy. The cause of this is unknown and as yet there is still no cure. This means that Harry is now insulin dependent for the rest of his life.

In order for Harry to receive the insulin he needs this means one thing – injections. Anything upwards of 6 injections a day and then there is the need to check his glucose levels. This is done with a finger prick test, again often upwards of 6 times a day. Please remember that Harry is only 5 years old.

Even though Harry is subjected to such invasive procedures he does not cry or moan. He simply accepts that this is a part of his life and continues to live it to the full. He is truly an inspiration and I am proud to be supporting such a worthwhile charity.

Diabetes UK is the leading charity that cares for, connects with and campaigns on behalf of every person affected by or at risk of diabetes. Their aims are to help people manage their diabetes; improve the quality of healthcare and pioneer research in care, cure and prevention of diabetes.

I am a registered paramedic and as a result am often called to emergencies that are diabetic related. My pledge is to raise £2000 for Diabetes UK to help them continue their excellent work helping children like Harry and the 3.7 million other UK residents who live with diabetes, improve their lives and to work towards a future without diabetes. I aim to do this by running 2 marathons 8 days apart, namely the Virgin London Marathon on 21 April 2013 and the Manchester Marathon on 28 April 2013.

Thank you for reading this and please if you could find it in your heart to donate to this worthy cause I would be very grateful. Thanks for your generosity xxx
