Story
Michael Leon Mullender (Mike to many) died at Basingstoke & North Hampshire Hospital on 18th December 2015 aged 84 years.
Michael was a long standing supporter of the community, serving with the Scout organisation for over 60 years, and was also a volunteer advisor for the Basingstoke Citizen's Advice Bureau for 15 years. He was honoured to receive an MBE for services to the Ministry of Defence and voluntary organisations in 1983. He was also awarded the Gazette Good Citizen award in November 1993 for his work as Warden of Crabtree Campsite (a residential activity site for the youth of Basingstoke) and was voted Basingstoke's Place to be Proud of 'Unsung Hero Award' for 2014. He was also the recipient of the Scout Association's Silver Wolf for services to Scouting of the most exceptional nature.
Michael was born in Lowestoft, a traditional fishing port. Many of his family for generations had strong links with the fishing trade and included sail makers, trawler men and boat skippers. Some of them served in the Royal Naval Reserve during the war years and others helped man the Pakefield Lifeboat. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution was therefore an organisation that Michael felt passionate about. It was Michael's desire to limit flowers at his funeral to immediate family, but if you would like to make a donation to the RNLI instead we feel this would be a fitting tribute.
Details of the funeral arrangements are included in the comments below
Thank You.
