SSJ's Recycle Bikes project provides experience, skills & training for volunteers from Southampton's homeless community; helping them take their first steps back to employment in a safe environment.

Story

Why is it important? Homelessness research suggests finding, and retaining, work is critical in preventing the problem. However, our experience tells us working gives someone a sense of purpose and self-respect, which is at least as important.  Engaging in meaningful activities, such as SSJ's Recycle Bikes, can have similar effects.

Activities can be key in reducing feelings of boredom & loneliness and can act as a catalyst; motivating people to make positive changes. Perhaps most importantly, activities can greatly improve well-being & quality of life for individuals who may have experienced extremely traumatic events or be faced with a great deal of stress

What will the money go to? £100 could equip a volunteer with a tool box & basic equipment, PPE & Work clothing and a Basic Repair/Build Bike training course. £500 would allow the Bike workshop to update and source specialist tools, which are in constant use and have a shelf life!
