Story

The challenge? To increase Re-Cycle Bikes sales & volunteers capacity we're cycling 50 miles of the South Downs Way!

What will the money go to? £100 could equip a volunteer with a tool box & basic equipment, PPE & Work clothing and a Basic Repair/Build Bike training course. £500 would allow the Bike workshop to update and source specialist tools, which are in constant use and have a shelf life!

Why is it important? Homelessness research suggests finding, and retaining, work is critical in preventing the problem. However, our experience tells us working gives someone a sense of purpose and self-respect, which is at least as important.  Engaging in meaningful activities, such as SSJ's Recycle Bikes, can have similar effects.

Project Manager, Myles, says "Activities can be key in reducing feelings of boredom & loneliness and can act as a catalyst; motivating people to make positive changes. Perhaps most importantly, activities can greatly improve well-being & quality of life for individuals who may have experienced extremely traumatic events or be faced with a great deal of stress".

A sense of Purpose

Paid work isn't an option for many homeless people; it's too far a jump from their chaotic lifestyles. It's important for people to move through a series of steps, starting with activities that have purpose & direction. SSJ's Bike workshop enables people to engage in a workplace setting without the pressure of paid work, allowing them to develop the skills, qualifications, and disciplines required for paid work.

Currently, 4 volunteers per year obtain placements from SSJ’s homelessness & addiction services. They're trained and supported to repair & refurbish donated bicycles into affordable, safe products which are sold to members of the public who may be struggling on low incomes. In order to not rely on additional funds, the bike workshop aims to sell an average of 5 bikes a week to become totally self-sustaining.
