Story
I began running just over a year ago, taking part in a couch to 5k programme ran by Durham County Council. I always hated running in my youth and other than playing a bit of football and cricket I haven't been active for a number of years.
I also suffered with stress and anxiety issues in recent years and running has been the one thing that has really helped me to cope, and it is a release from the stresses and strains that daily life brings.
I competed in my first 5k race in my hometown, Durham City last July, and my first 10k in Sunderland earlier this year. As part of my Great North Run training I am also running the Durham 10k and Darlington 10k this summer.
I didn't intend on running the GNR anytime soon, however it has always been on my bucket list. The opportunity arose when Dementia Matters were looking for people to run for them and raise money for their tremendous charity. It immediately interested me as I have first hand experience of the awful condition, as my late grandmother suffered with it during her final years. It was an awful thing having to witness someone you are so close to going through.
By running the GNR for Dementia Matters it will be a huge motivation for me, knowing I'm running it in memory of my grandmother and raising money for a wonderful cause.
I would be hugely grateful to anyone who would like to sponsor me and support me, and you can rest assured that when the big day arrives I will be giving it my all.
Thank you,
Neil.
