Story
I’ve been volunteering for the Huntingdon group of Contact the Elderly since its launch in September 2016 and the group are currently at capacity with more elderly guests on the waiting list. All of our 10 guests are aged 75 or over and live alone. We meet once a month on a Sunday, usually in a volunteer’s own home for afternoon tea, chat, music, sometimes an activity and sometimes something educational! Once or twice a year we also do something special, for example, this year we took the guests on a boat trip on the Ouse and also visited a birds of prey sanctuary. The group is entirely unfunded however and therefore relies on donations and fundraising which is reinvested in the charity. We are currently raising funds for 2019-2020 - the more support we receive, the greater our future chances are of forming a second or even a third local group and thereby elimating the need for a waiting list.
Although I like to indulge in a spot of cake baking fundraising, it’s time to up the bar! A few of my friends will know that I have patellofemoral pain syndrome, so this trek will also be a personal challenge for me (the going down especially!).
