During my time as an oncology nurse in London, I looked after patients suffering from multiple myeloma.  In the 1990s there was very little that could be done for these patients, unless they were young enough to have a transplant.  The patients I nursed were frightened and in considerable pain, with no hope of a cure.

Thanks to organisations like Myeloma UK, the number of treatment options that are now available for patients living with this horrible condition are vastly improved; but it is still incurable.  Myeloma UK is the only organisation in the country dealing exclusively with myeloma and their ultimate goal is to find a cure.  As well as funding academic and clinical research, they provide a multitude of support services to patients, family and friends to help them deal with everything a myeloma diagnosis brings.

I consider it a privilege to be taking part in an activity which is raising money for Myeloma UK - The 2018 London to Paris bike ride.  Yes, I am prepared to swap my beloved running to cycling (at least for this year). For less altruistic reasons, the chance of cycling on roads closed to traffic and taking in the scenery of France appeals enormously.
