Story
Mike's amazing twin boys, Ollie & Ben, were born with a rare, life-limiting and progressive genetic condition called Mucopolysaccharide (MPS).
Unfortunately, this meant that the two playful boys had to face a number of worsening challenges throughout their short lives - overactive behaviour, inability to sleep, loss of speech, losing the ability to walk, infections, breathing difficulties, seizures, joint stiffness and difficulty swallowing resulting in requiring a feeding tube, to name a few.
The whole family were struggling to cope when they first visited Helen & Douglas House. This warm and welcoming place provides support for parents and lets them have time off from being carers. The twins loved it too - they enjoyed the hydrotherapy pool, the sensory room, arts and crafts and time away from mum and dad! Over the years, all the staff came to know and love Ollie and Ben, and were always their first visitors when they had to go to hospital.
Sadly, Ben passed away in 2012 at the age of 9, and we lost Ollie in May 2018 at the age of 15. At these difficult times, Helen & Douglas House were just as supportive as always. They provided a place to mourn and to remember happy times and so many of the staff were able to attend the funerals. They can't be thanked enough for helping the boys and their family live the best life possible.
Now in the boys' memory we are determined to raise £10,000 for the charity that made such a difference to all of our lives. The children's hospice relies on donations to stay open, and just this year they had to close Douglas house (for young people over 18) due to lack of funds.
To reach this target we will be taking part in multiple fund raising activities; from Tough Mudder, to a charity golf day, to trekking the snake-infested jungles of Borneo!
We thank you for any help you're able to give to enable us to reach our target in memory of two very special boys.
