Ehlers-Danlos Support UK improves quality of life for people living with the Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS). We work across the UK to support, advise and inform those living with the condition and the medical professionals working with them.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am going to be climbing Roseberry Topping, a local hill (1049 feet (320 m) high). This might not seem like a challenge, but with a rare condition called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, it will be a huge challenge for myself.

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome is a rare condition which affects the collagen in your body. There are 13 types. The most common type is Hypermobile EDS (hEDS)

Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome is generally considered the least severe form of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) although significant complications can occur. Although hypermobile EDS is thought to be a genetic condition, the exact underlying cause is unknown in most cases. A small percentage of people with this condition have a mutation in the TNXB gene. Treatment and management is focused on preventing serious complications and relieving associated signs and symptoms. The signs and symptoms of hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome vary but may include:

 ● Joint hypermobility affecting both large and small joints

● Frequent joint dislocations and subluxations (partial dislocation), often affecting the shoulder, kneecap, and/or temporomandibular joint

 ● Soft, smooth skin that may be slightly elastic and bruises easily.

● Chronic musculoskeletal pain

● Dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system

I am raising money for EDS UK who run support groups for those affected. They also fund research into the condition and help to educate doctors. Without the help of EDS UK many people will go undiagnosed for years.
