Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our fundraising site.

WE HAVE JUST PASSED £21,000 WHICH TOGETHER WITH THE NHS CONTRIBUTION WILL PAY FOR A MARIE CURIE NURSE FOR A WHOLE YEAR

At the ripe old age of 73 with 2 false knees and a false hip, I am planning to do probably my last two physical challenges for Marie Curie;
-London Marathon on 2nd October 2022
- Vietnam to Cambodia Cycle challenge from 11 to 22 October 2023

This time will be different as I will be “running” the marathon with my daughter Philippa who will be “celebrating” her 40th birthday. Loosely described as running, I’ll be training to “run” a maximum of 5kms at a time  interspersed with quick walking and jogging.
At this stage, I’m aiming for 6 to 7 hours.
Philippa will be running the whole distance ( target time 5 hours) so will have time to recover and shower to cheer me on as I hopefully finish.

The Vietnam to Cambodia Cycle Challenge will take place over 11 days; total distance 550 kms with a maximum 95 Kms a day.
I will be doing this with 50 others and hope to raise £100,000 for the Charity which will pay for 5000 hours of wonderful nursing care.

Philippa and my aim is for us to raise £21,000 plus for Marie Curie to pay for three whole days costs of one of the 9 hospices throughout the U.K. and Northern Ireland or, a nurse for a whole year. Our costs for these events have been covered so every pound you donate will go directly to front line care.

Together with some generous donations from the Old Housebuilders we will start our fundraising by donating the first £2000.

We have set up a just giving site so if you would like to support us please donate below.

Many thanks for reading this; and for those people who have so generously supported me over the past 14 years of challenges, you’ll be pleased to know this will probably be it!

Thank you so much

Take care

Philippa and Paul

Ps. Please note for every £1 donated, Marie Curie will receive £1.25 after tax benefits and you may also be able to claim 20% relief.

Pps. Some facts about Marie Curie;
- 2023 Marie Curie celebrates 75th anniversary, the same as the NHS
- last year 42168 terminally ill were cared for at home and 7385 in the 9 hospices
-there are 2154 nurses and health care assistants
- 898274 people accessed the online Covid 19 information hub
- Marie Curie started caring only for terminally ill people with cancer but this was extended a few years ago to all terminal illnesses.
- 1 in 2 of us will suffer from some sort of cancer in our lifetime - some of those will be terminal and cared for by Marie Curie
- JUST £20 pays for ONE HOUR of nursing.
