Ty Hafan: The Garden Project
A memorial garden plays a vital palliative role in supporting the families of children that have died at Tŷ Hafan. Such a garden is an important space that provides a place for mums and dads, brothers and sisters, to remember and reflect the positive memories created during the life of the child who has died.
The current memorial garden was completed in 2001 however, after a number of years it is now looking tired, overgrown and no longer fit for purpose. With 245 children having died in the care of Tŷ Hafan since 1999 and with each being remembered by a pebble, a larger garden is needed to provide a prominence of position for each child and afford space to continue to do so in the future.
Alongside the memorial garden, we want to create a new sensory garden that can be enjoyed by the children currently in care. Plants, hard landscaping, other garden materials and features would be selected for their appeal to all five senses with the aim of offering a richer and more therapeutic experience.
We need help to turn this vision in to a reality; to update the existing memorial garden, create a new sensory garden and link all of the outside space together, transforming the area in to a fully accessible space for the children and families who use the hospice.
The Costain/Vinci joint venture along with other key partners have agreed to support the design and refurbishment of the memorial garden at Ty Hafan and will be seeking to raise financial support for the proposals during the course of this year.
