I am taking part in the Great North Run for Mummy's Star.

As many or you know I was diagnosed with malignant melanoma in November 2020 at 30 weeks pregnant. I was terrified and the remaining months of my pregnancy were overshadowed by the fear that I may not get to see my babies grow up. Mummy's Star were there to offer emotional and financial support, a platform to chat to other mums facing cancer during pregnancy and/or with young children and even sent little gifts that brought some light to some very dark days. I cannot thank Mummy's Star enough so despite being overweight, unfit, a mum to two very young children and not in the slightest bit ready to run down the road let alone do a half marathon I am going to try and take life by the balls and give something back. The news of a pregnancy or a recent birth is an exciting time for all prospective and existing parents. However, it can be cruelly interrupted by the news of a cancer diagnosis and the worry that this brings to Mum, family and friends. Worse still, this could have also led to the loss of a pregnancy or baby. Every day 2 women are diagnosed with cancer during pregnancy or shortly after birth. A cancer diagnosis is difficult at any time, the added pressures of pregnancy, looking after a small baby or grieving loss can be scary and isolating. That's where Mummy's Star comes in. Mummy's Star believes that no one should have to go through this alone. They help families meet others in a similar position, offer small grants to relieve some financial burden, give support to partners and the wider family, promote awareness and support research.
