Story
I have completed the walk on target!
85 miles in 4 days and raised over £400 for the Mental Health Foundation - plus the extra from Gift Aid.
Thank you so much to all those who have sponsored me. Thanks to my sisters Margaret and Susan for picking me up, dropping me off and feeding me.
Thanks to Kier for joining me for the last day. We covered 15 miles and arrived at John Clare's cottage bang on the target time of 3.00, just in time for a a cup of tea.
The walk was one of the most enjoyable things I have ever done, the weather was perfect, and I didn't get lost.
Have a look at the photos of the walk on this page.
Now go out and buy a copy of John Clare's poetry and Jonathan Bate's wonderful Clare biography.
Thanks again to everyone. Next year I might try and even longer walk!
Peter
Over the four days 15th - 18th of October I will be attempting to walk from Thundridge in Hertfordshire to Helpston, just north of Peterborough. The walk follows some of the route taken by the poet John Clare when in 1841 he walked from an asylum in Epping Forest to his home in the village of Helpston. I have already completed the first part of the walk and I hope to cover as much as possible of the remaing part over these four days. With any luck, I might even make it to John Clare's Cottage on Sunday afternoon.
For much of his life John Clare suffered from mental health problems and spent his last 23 years in an asylum in Northampton. see more about his life on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Clare
