The Road to by Bike - I made it!

Two years ago, my brother and his wife Mandy were so looking forward to the arrival of their new baby (they already had , aged 4 at the time)

Everything went according to plan and on 15th February 2007 was born - a bonny, bouncing, beautiful baby boy.  Tragically, disaster struck at six weeks when he contracted meningitis.  Unfortunately, ’s illness was not detected quickly enough and, having finally been rushed into the Evelina Children’s Hospital in (part of the ’s and ’ Trust), he had to fight for his little life. Though we were all truly grateful that the life-saving procedures and care offered by this great hospital and it’s dedicated staff managed to save him,  after his ten week fight to stay alive, Jacob was diagnosed as having severe brain damage resulting in the condition known as “cerebral palsy”.

Fortunately today, , Mandy and have a happy and growing young fellow who brings a huge amount of joy to us all.  However, with so much care and attention required to manage ’s continuing needs, I feel I need to do something to help support the mammoth efforts put in by my brother and his wife and all those other parents whose children are dealt this callous blow just when life is beginning.

So, with your backing, I wanted to try and raise at least £5000 for Kent Portage (East) www.portage.org.uk which offers tremendous support to Jacob and other young children affected by learning or physical difficulties in our area. This support is carried out in the familiar surroundings of the family’s own home by fully accredited trainers and they work with families to help them develop a quality of life and experience for themselves and their young children in which they can learn together, play together, participate and be included in their community in their own right. They also provide specially adapted equipment and toys to assist with mobility and learning.

Now, having decided to cycle from home to  Reims in France from 21-23 April, I just wanted to let you know that I made it. It was nearly 400kms and I arrived there at 7pm last Thursday.

Thank you to those who have supported me already but also to those who have promised to send a donation (there's still time)
