Event: Men's Health Survival Of The Fittest, on 17 November 2012
We care for children with shortened lives to support them and their families.

Story

As part of a team of 10 at Excel Martial Arts, I am taking part in the Men's Health Survival of the Fittest event in Nottingham on Saturday 13th October to raise money for a very worthwhile cause - Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice.

I have read about this challenge in Men's Health for years, but never thought I could do it. Most I have ever run is once round Rother Valley (3.3miles), and can't do that without stopping for a bit!

The challenge will push all of us to our physical and mental limits as we try and push through 12km of gruelling obstacles such as scaling hay bales, wading through the River Trent, climbing the stairs in the Nottingham Forest ground, among many others before reaching the finish line, and the killer 9ft wall you have to scale to reach the end! (A video of the course and the challenges can be seen later on this site)

All of that will be worth it though to raise money for Bluebell Wood, because without support from fundraisers, it would be impossible for them to offer the care that they do! For those who do not know what Bluebell Wood is or what they do:

Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice offers care and support to children with a shortened life expectancy, both in their own homes and at our hospice in Sheffield. Bluebell Wood is a place filled with laughter and love. We give families the chance to relax, take a break and have fun, and we help support the whole family. It costs £3 million every year to offer this support. With no statutory government funding, without the help of our supporters we simply couldn’t help all the children that we do.

About the charity

At Bluebell Wood we provide care to children & young adults whose lives are sadly just too short; both in their own homes and our hospice in North Anston. We believe that every family deserves to make magical memories with their child, we need to raise £14,000 each day to keep our doors open.
