Story

Maxwell is my great nephew.

In the autumn of 2017 (aged 14 months) he was diagnosed with Restrictive Cardiomyopathy (RCM), a rare form of heart muscle disease that means he is now waiting for a heart transplant at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

His mum, Sophie, had a heart transplant 10 years ago at Great Ormond Street Hospital when she was just 15. Sophie also had a beautiful daughter, Isla, who died in 2014 just before her 2nd birthday, also from a heart condition.

A donor heart could take up to 2 years to be found. If Maxwell’s heart condition deteriorates further before receiving a transplant, he will require a Berlin Heart until such time that a donation heart is available and matched up for him. At that time Maxwell will have to stay in Great Ormond Street Hospital until he has his transplant and thereafter until he is fit and well to come home.
