Story

My name is Lance Corporal Bryan Phillips, I previously served in 1st battalion Irish guards for 10 years. I served in Iraq in (OP Telic 2007) and also in Afghanistan (OP Herrick 2010&2012), during my last tour I was the victim of an IED explosive device which resulted in the loss of both legs above the knee and also suffering multiple injuries to my arm. Following on from that was a lengthy rehabilitation process at the Military Rehab Centre at Hedley Court. With determination and support from my family, friends, public and various charities I was able to walk once again. I consider myself to be one of the lucky ones as there are comrades who were injured much more severely than myself, I make the most of everyday and embrace it. It means the world to me that I can put myself in the position of helping others, I will continue to do this so long as it's possible for me.
Moving on I have involved myself in various fundraising efforts, one being that I cycled on my hand bike from Mizen Head (most southern tip of Ireland) to Malin Head (most northern tip of Ireland) along with members from the Ulster Branch Irish Guards Association raising over £10,000.00 for the Irish Guards Benevolent Fund, this give me immense satisfaction and to be involved in an activity with like minded people has helped in my rehabilitation.
My last venture was called 'Poppy 100', Where I raised funds for the Poppy Appeal and the Irish Guards Benevolent Fund by calling on assistance from various Military groups, family, friends and other organisations that assisted. My plan was to lay 100 wreaths at 100 War Memorials on Armistice Day 2018 throughout Northern Ireland to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the end of the First World War. I provided groups a wreath that was laid by me or an individual or group who sponsored the wreath. A wreath was minimum donation of £100.00, overall we raised over £20,000.00 .
On June 2022 to mark 10 years to the day whilst out on a foot patrol where I stood on an improvised explosive device and lost both my legs I pushed  myself unsupported in my manual wheelchair non stop(39hrs it took) from Dublin to Belfast (101miles) I also raised  awareness of everyday obstacles that wheelchair users come across during a normal day to day .
To help raise awareness and funds I also travel the country telling my story about that eventful day when I lost my legs whilst promoting resilience and how to overcome adversity, if you would like to book a short talk followed by any Q&As please drop the page a message , this talk is ideal for schools , groups , clubs or organisations.
