Adam Hugh Griogair Clift was one of those rare people you meet in life that mean so much to you and become unforgettable. Every person who met Adam said he had made their lives that bit brighter. As his friends, we completely agree. Through trials and tribulations, not once would we see a frown, nor come away without tears in our eyes from the laughter he brought. He was a genuine person, always offering support and encouragement that could not be surpassed. He was never afraid to just be himself. At the end of January 2014, Adam was diagnosed with Burkitt's Lymphoma. We were all hit very hard with this terrible news and the following few months featured him being taken out of school to receive Chemotherapy. After 4 months of treatment, he entered remission to the relief of us all and was given the all-clear in April 2014. He bravely sat his GCSE exams alongside his friends and classmates, despite missing most of the year, simply reflecting how strong his character was. Things started to feel normal again, like everything was just going to continue as it was before. Unfortunately, after summer ended, he had a relapse and endured a Bone Marrow transplant in November 2014 whilst we all began Sixth Form – never anticipating Adam not being by our side during this new stage in life, but we remained optimistic. His recovery was quick, and he began attending classes again. Hopes were high as plans for university were well under discussion – the feeling of experiencing this stepping stone in life as a whole friendship group seemed within reach. Unfortunately, in February 2015, he relapsed once more and due to the long waiting list of treatments needed, Adam had to wait a year to receive his. In April 2016, Adam was due to celebrate his 18th Birthday and, unbeknown to him, a massive surprise party was being planned by us all. Sadly, Adam passed away in March 2016, months before immunotherapy trials began in the UK when the cancer took over to the devastation of his family and everyone who knew him.
A year has now passed. We have all started university, where we have met new people and made new friends. But not one of us will ever forget Adam. He would’ve loved university and no doubt would be sharing his antics with the rest of us. This is why we have decided to start a campaign to raise money for Bloodwise – a charity that funds vital research into blood cancers, like Lymphoma. This charity was specifically chosen by Adam as he did not want other teenagers to endure the same ordeal him and his family had to go through. We want to honour Adam’s wishes in any way we can. We hope that by raising money, we will find a treatment sooner.
So next time you reach for that pint of ale or glass of wine, grab a glass of water to honour all the drink’s Adam should’ve had, donate the money to Bloodwise and #RaiseAGlassForAdam.
