Story

2 Cyclists + 2 Non-Cyclists + 2 Tandems

112 miles over the Lake Distirct passes

Supporting cancer patients across the UK in their battles

WE DID IT! THE DALTONS DID THE WHITTON ON TANDEMS

On the 11th of May 2014 we completed the Fred Whitton Challenge in an incredible time of 10hrs 37mins.  The tandems were piloted by Toby and James, stoked by Alice and Kate.  We rode the 112 miles course over the Lake District passes through torrential Cumbrian rain.  The cheers from fellow riders and spectators spurred us on during the highs and lows of the ride.

We undertook the Fred Whitton in memory of our dear mum, Elizabeth Dalton who passed away just a year ago in April 2013 from cancer.  We have raised a significant amount of money for two charities; Macmillan and the Rosemere Cancer Care Foundation. Macmillan nurses work tirelessly to care for cancer patients and support their families.  The Rosemere Cancer Foundation is a local charity to Cumbria that raise funds for equipment and facilities for those suffering with cancer.  Donations given by cheque and in collection buckets at Dent Stores and Wheelbase will be added to the amount raised on this JustGiving website.

Mum would have loved that it was a proper family effort, with partners and her grandchildren supplying sandwiches and cheering from the sidelines and in the support vehicle. Our Dad crossed the finish line with us cycling the last eight miles.

We'd like to send a massive thank you to everyone who has donated; family, friends, Fred Whitton riders and spectators.  Your heartfelt comments gave us great encouragement and motivation to keep up the training and conquer those mountains.

Thank you

The Daltons

Myself and my brother James, co-owners of Wheelbase, along with our sisters Alice and Kate sadly lost our beautiful Mum to Ovarian Cancer in April 2013.

Our Mum loved the passion myself and James have for cycling and the Fred Whitton Challenge. The only time she ventured on to the 't'internet' was to check our times each year we rode the Whitton. The 2012 Whitton was the last cycling event that our Mum supported us at the finish line before the horrendous disease took hold.

Following our Mum's passing I had the crazy idea to ride the Whitton on tandems with my non-cycling sisters, Alice and Kate in memory of our Mum. Riding the course on tandems will be a first for the Whitton.  This is an enormous challenge.  The Whitton is regarded to be the UK's toughest sportive. The route of 112 miles will take us over the Lake District passes of Kirkstone, Honister, Newlands, Whinlatter, Hardknott & Wrynose. Alice and Kate do not share mine and James's enthusiasm for cycling, but they have been training hard to tackle this gruelling challenge.

So here we are, we are going to tackle the Fred Whitton Challenge 2014 on tandems to raise much needed funds for Macmillan Cancer Care and the Rosemere Cancer Foundation.  The Whitton takes place on Sunday 11 May 2014 from Grasmere.

PLEASE GIVE GENEROUSLY.

Thank you for your support,

Toby, James, Kate and Alice
