Robert's 75th Anniversary Arnhem Parachute Jump

75th Anniversary Arnhem Parachute Jump · 20 September 2019
As an ex-serviceman, although not Para/Airborne trained I have over the last 5 years participated in the Annual Arnhem ride to remember the fallen during Operation Market Garden. To commemorate this, as part of the 75th Anniversary this year there will be a mass Airborne drop into Ginkel Heath which I will be taking part in.
To do this I have had to complete a 5 day course in Holland which has qualified me to jump in Arnhem on the 75th Anniversary. My participation in this will be done in Second World War uniform to remember those that gave all for our freedom.
Qualifying to do this is especially poignant considering I suffered a broken back (in a non related incident) a number of years ago and thought that I may not have recovered sufficiently to be able to achieve any parachute jumps let alone now being able to jump on the 75th Anniversary!
This is a huge achievement for me however this is small in comparison to those who gave in 1944. This in no way makes me a Para but is my way to show respect for those who have gone before me.
In doing so I hope to raise awareness and money for the work that the charity do today for the children with Type 1 Diabetes and the work that is done to help them with their diagnosis and managing their condition.
My Grandson at the age of 6 was diagnosed with Type 1 and has received help and support and participated in activities run by the charity (Chuftkidz).
Colchester Hospital Charity for Children with Type 1 Diabetes is a charity that supports children and young people in North East Essex with type 1 diabetes. It was set up in 2014 and by supporting us you are providing children and young families with T1 diabetes the opportunity to take part in fun yet educational events which will help them to live normal healthy lives whilst managing their condition confidently and appropriately. A diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes can often cause anxiety and lack of confidence regarding living normal lives however with the correct help and support it shouldn't inhibit anyone. Our aim is for all children with T1 diabetes to achieve what they want whether it be getting a Karting racing licence, a horse racing licence or trekking across the Amazon - just a few of some our children and young peoples achievements.
