Hernias are a huge burden in low resource countries. Hernias can be debilitating. Access to timely surgery is inadequate due lack of resources or poor finances. Some hernia sufferers in these countries, therefore, die needlessly from complications of hernias. Operation Hernia is committed to alleviating the suffering of hernia patients in these disadvantaged countries. We achieve this by offering a hernia service and by training local doctors in hernia surgery. All our surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and technicians are volunteers who fund themselves. All monies raised through donations go towards treatment of patients and training of local doctors. Your donation will transform a hernia sufferer's life. Thank you for your donation.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

In October I head off to Ghana with Sue Johnson, our Surgical Care Practitioner from NGH.

We are joining a team to spend two weeks out in Carpenter, in rural Ghana.  It will take about 14 hours to drive from Accra up to a small rural clinic.  There we will set up an operating theatre, and plan to repair aproximately 250 hernias.

The team will be made up 3 surgeons, an anaesthetist, nurses and theatre workers, coming from Leighton, Northampton and Canada.

We will take all the equipment we need, including gloves and drapes, anaesthetic, mesh and even a head light.

The local people are principally farmers and hernias are very common.  They will travel considerable distances to be able to access this service, with patients even coming from the Ivory Coast and neighboring Burkina Faso.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

So please dig deep and donate now.  Your money will buy vital medical equipment needed for the trip, and a few luxuries such as a toys, school equipment and footballs for the local children.

From Sue and myself and all of the team, many thanks in anticipation of your generosity.
