100 mile Ultra-marathon · 12 October 2019
Thank you for looking at my just giving page.
In October 2019, I (with Richard Dennis-Jones) will be running 100 miles (160km) non stop with the aim of completing this daunting task in less than 24 hours. To put it in to context, we will be running almost 4 back-to-back marathons along the Ridgeway Path (i.e. hilly!) - This is the equivalent to running from London to Birmingham! Training alone for this challenge has been tough, having started in November 2018 and enduring -10c temperatures, dark 6am starts and thick snow.
So why am I putting myself through this?
My eldest son, Harry, was born with a very rare genetic disease called ADNP syndrome. To date there are only 200 people in the world diagnosed with this syndrome. Though Harry is a very happy and loving boy, he is severely mentally and physically disabled and life can be a huge challenge for him and his family. We have been through some very difficult times with him (most recently we needed the services of the air ambulance whilst on summer holiday in North Wales!) - however a shining light for Harry and our family in recent years has been Disability Challengers.
Disability Challengers are a small charity (based in Farnham and Guildford) who offer respite support to
families of children with severe special needs. They are in short
AMAZING and offer Harry a safe environment with one on one support to play and have fun whilst the rest of the family (Harry has a younger brother and sister) can have some semblance of 'normality' for a few hours at the weekend (simple things like going for a bike ride or to a cafe for lunch).
It is difficult to put into words but Disability Challengers support has been incredible for us and they are a huge part of the drive behind me undertaking a challenge as difficult as this.
As this run is going to be very tough and the charity are so amazing, I have set the daunting goal to raise £20,000 for Disability Challengers. This in itself is a big undertaking but every penny of the money raised will help them to continue to run their respite facilities for families like us.
Thank you for your generosity.
