I'm taking part in The Rainforest Run because when I visited International Animal Rescue's Orangutan Rescue Centre in Borneo back when it first started in 2010, it really affected me. The Orangutans in their care had lost everything at the hands of humans: from tiny orphans to adults who had been held captive for years as entertainment. Once recovered and rehabilitated, these amazing individuals needed to be safely released back into their natural home, but it was a world fraught with the dangers of human enterprise, and shrinking at a horrifying rate. Many years later, the rainforest is still vanishing before our eyes. Climate change and biodiversity loss are having a catastrophic effect on the world. Rainforests are a vital component in the war against global temperature rises, they are the lungs of the planet. Without them, none of us stands a chance of survival.
