Elmore was established to provide support in 1989; focusing on people in Oxford City who were falling between the gaps of support services, and who had complex or multiple needs. Today, Elmore holds a similar place locally; known as the go to organisation to support people who need a different approach in Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire. The Elmore approach often includes support delivered in the home, or the person’s local community, and is characterised by case workers who persevere, support people through a number of challenges, and seek always to get alongside and aim for empowerment and increased independence as outcomes of this support. The people who Elmore support often experience mental health issues, and may face challenges with substance use, insecure housing and domestic abuse. People may have experienced abuse or exploitation and found that they need support to tackle their problems, improve their lives, and feel part of their communities. Elmore has an active and influential members association, and is part of the Oxfordshire Mental Health Partnership and Oxfordshire Homeless Alliance.

Story

Like most humans, the thought of running 13.1 consecutive miles fills me with dread. But mental health is a cause that's very close to my heart, and I'm determined to show myself that I can do this.

Elmore the charity Blackwell's raised money for during our mental health festival. We were eager to work together again and they've offered me a charity place to run the Oxford Half. I'm so proud to be doing this and hopeful that my efforts can make a difference. Please, please, please sponsor me if you can or share!

More about Elmore:

Across Oxfordshire Elmore supports people who experience several overlapping problems at the same time, such as mental ill health, homelessness, modern day slavery, exploitation, drug and alcohol addiction, and offending. Without Elmore, they would fall through the gaps between services and find themselves in a downward spiral. At the cutting edge of Elmore’s work is our intensive one-to-one crisis interventions and ongoing support to hundreds of people every year. Last year Elmore had to raise £68,000 to provide the same level of support.

More about me:

I've always admired runners and wished I could run, and this year I decided to make it happen for myself.

Since April I've run a 7k, two 10ks and taken part in a 10 mile hike. Running a half marathon feels like a comparatively huge challenge, but I'm training six days a week and feel ready 🙂
