We provide mental health & support services to women affected by domestic abuse

Story

The film we’ve made doesn’t exist in a bubble. We live in a world that’s dangerous for women, in which most women are killed by men they know. We’d like to use this film to raise awareness - and money - for a life changing organisation that needs funding.

Woman's Trust supports women affected by domestic abuse by providing counselling and support groups. Domestic abuse affects 1 in 4 women in the UK and is the biggest single cause of female depression and mental health problems.

Whether we feel unsafe going for a lone run, walking through a park at night, speaking with a police officer, or just being in our home, we all know fear doesn't only come when we’re attacked. Trauma creates a fear that lives inside us wherever we go.

Woman’s Trust helps women find emotional safety. Below are the testimonies of 2 women who have attended the groups. As always, for reasons of personal safety, they cannot provide their full names. Please read their words, as their voices are so often silenced:

When I first came to the group 5 years ago I’d just separated from my ex and I thought I was going crazy. I shook all the time, had nightmares, I couldn’t be near men or hear their voices. I kept thinking he was coming to kill me. The world was a really frightening place. I’m a mum and I was scared for myself and my family. Woman’s Trust took me in and with their support I learned about my PTSD and how to recover. It felt like they saved my life. Then in lockdown his post-separation abuse got worse again and last year I relapsed. I got referred to the NHS Mental Health crisis team by my GP. I was given a diagnosis of complex-PTSD and passed on to community mental health services but I never heard anything more. I contacted Woman’s Trust and they immediately got me into a group. I am now back in recovery. Over the years I’ve never met so many kind, strong, supportive women as the ones I’ve met in the groups. Woman’s Trust once gave me a shawl. When things are bad and I feel unsafe, I wrap it around me and it’s like all the women I know from there are with me." Stephanie

“Woman’s Trust provided an absolute lifeline for me in dealing with the trauma that comes with abusive relationships. I was part of the group counselling, and found that the support they offered was simply unparalleled compared to other experiences of support with these kinds of situations. Our counsellor was empathetic, patient, organised, professional and genuinely caring towards every one of us. I left each session feeling a sense of strength and calm, and have made considerable progress in tackling the issues I face as a result of the help I was given. I thank Woman’s Trust from the bottom of my heart, and I wish that every woman facing similar hardships could be offered the same quality of support they provide.” Olivia
