Why this campaign is so important for us....

Our story has to start with our mother. She arrived in the UK, illiterate yet determined. Though she lacked the tools to navigate this new world with ease, she possessed an unshakable belief in the value of learning and growth and did whatever she could to provide us with the opportunities she herself had been denied.

This belief was her gift to us, her children. She poured herself into our futures, ensuring that we broke barriers and defied stereotypes, particularly as women. She encouraged us relentlessly, taking us to the library, fostering community connections, and creating a home that welcomed everyone—expectant mothers from all nationalities, the elderly, and new members of the community. For her, hospitality was universal, transcending language barriers and cultural divides, often symbolized by a simple cup of tea shared in the living room.

Our father would often return home, to find someone from the community in the living room regardless of background, united by her kindness and generosity despite language barriers. She was determined to grow and took every opportunity to learn English and still strives to learn Arabic today. Her efforts remind us of her strong will, and what she might have achieved had she been afforded the privilege of formal education.

Her story is not unique. It echoes the journeys of countless mothers and grandmothers who, despite their struggles, forged paths in a new world, empowering their children to dream beyond the confines of their realities. They taught us values of independence, education, and the importance of lifting others along the way.

This legacy fuels our passion for women's empowerment. Through the Islamic Relief cause for Women's Empowerment, we have the chance to honour the sacrifices of women like our mother and support others to thrive.
