We support primary schools in rural Kenya to improve education for children.

Story

My name is Freya. I am 11 years old and this is my story.

On a cold Sunday morning in December, I set off on a family walk from my home in rural Bristol. After an exhausting two hours, we arrived at our end point, which happened to be my school in Bath. It struck me that there are many children in the world who do this every day; not through choice, but necessity. It helped me to recognise how lucky I am. Not only do I have a car to get me to and from school, and people who are able to drive me, but it is also a safe, happy and comfortable place to be when I am there.

When I got home, I decided to do some research. I found the website for African Promise and discovered that many children in rural Kenya have to walk over 10k to and from school. It also shocked me that when they got there, they often didn't have access to food, water or even a seat to sit on. Sometimes there wasn't even a teacher there to teach them that day. African Promise are trying to do something about it and I want to help them.

In solidarity with the many children who don't have the luxury of choice, I am going to take on the long walk to and from my own school every day, rain or shine, for one week in March. This will mean waking up at 5am in order to eat, pack up and leave the house on time to arrive at school by 8am, and leaving school to get home in time for dinner. This will mean walking for over 4hours every day, and up and over the hills that surround me. My mum is going to join me for every step of the way.

If you can, please sponsor me in support of this worthy cause. Thank you!
