Story

My Dad (Adam Montgomery) passed away in 2018 and I had planned to do a memorial run in 2020 but was postponed due to COVID.  I have now set a new date of Saturday 18 June 2022 for this to take place.

The distance for the run on is 56 miles which is the distance between Auchinleck where my Dad was born and Penicuik.

One of my friends Wes Thomson who has experience running this distance is completing the full course with me.  We will also be joined on the run by my brother Ross with our brother-in-law Robin and Cousin Sean supporting us by bike.

In addition to his 10years involved with Eskmill Boys Club now PAYFC he was also a local Councillor for over 30yrs.  With many notable achievements during this peroid in office he fought for many improvements in the town and he certainly left his mark.   He also helped numerous residents along the way as many will testify.

The money raised will be used to buy and install a memorial bench overlooking the astro on Bog Road which my dad was instrumental in installing some years ago from his elected position.

In addition there are plans through PAYFC for Bog Rd astro to be renamed Montgomery Park so this seems a logical location..

Initially the money was to provide banners for the Adam Montgomery festival the club have organised pre COVID however the delay of the run due to the pandemic has reshaped my thinking and I believe a bench is a better use of the funds.

Banners for the festival may well still happen depending on the amount raised and likley continuation of the festival.  Regardless any additional monies after the bench will be used at the discretion of the PAYFC committee for the benefit of local youngsters or other recognition ideas and will be highlighted on PAYFC social media channels.

All money goes directly to the club who are a registered charity.

The route follows the John Muir Way from Dunbar for 15 miles to North Berwick.  Then hugs the coastline for 20 miles to Musselburgh where we join the cycleway at the aptly named Eskmills Industrial Estate.

We then head towards Whitecraig, through Dalkeith Country Park, follow A7 to the Wisp at Danderhall, down Edmonstone Road passing both the house my dad moved to from Auchinleck in 1962 and the one where I first lived totalling a further 8miles.

The 2nd last section of 4.7 miles passes the graveyard where my Dad’s parents are buried, then via the new cycleway and A772 down to Eskbank Train station.

The final section is the Dalkeith to Penicuik cycleway, past his final home at Jackson Street, then finishing the final 8.3miles at Bog Road Astro.  Which will hopefully be renamed by that point.

You are welcome to join the run at any stage so please get in touch on comp_coach&vol@payfcnet.com and with the final part being along the old railway path it should make it easier for people to join should they wish.

Donations of any value are welcome and should you wish to pay in actual cash then sponsor forms are located in the Navaar, Crown, Royal Hotel, the Post Office and Penicuik Athletic Committee Room.
