Story

Thursday 23rd July was progressing like any other work day until the early afternoon, I was preparing for a meeting when I received a call from my daughter’s mobile. On the other end of the line was a policeman who was in my house with the Fire Brigade, I remember swearing and then seeking permission to miss the meeting to rush home. Our dishwasher had been the centre of an inferno. I got home an hour later and the kitchen was still really hot. The fire fighters who attended did a sterling job, comforted my wife (Sarah) when she had a wobble on getting home. They helped distract the children while Sarah reviewed the house and they provided superb advice and support. Fortunately, the windows were closed otherwise the whole house may have gone up. Sarah and I will be eternally grateful to the fire fighters that attended the fire at our home, their actions saved the structure and limited the damage done. Going inside at the moment, it doesn’t feel like home but we know that it will soon. We are still on a long journey to get back into the house but the light is at the end of the tunnel and we are very aware that it could have been so much worse. Ben (my son) talks about it most days and finds that his best way of dealing with it. He has told his teachers and his classmates and plays games where there are fires and the day is saved.  I hope both children will always have that gratitude and admiration for fire fighters.

Saying “Thank you” has never seemed enough. With the completion of the repairs in sight my mind turned to doing something that doesn’t necessarily return the favour but I hope will demonstrate how much it means to me.

The Fire Fighters charity supply rehabilitation, recuperation and support to active and retired fire fighters and their families, it costs £8 million a year to provide these services to people who don’t ask questions before putting their lives on the line, it seems the best way to demonstrate my gratitude.
