Story
The Shefton Collection of Greek and Etruscan Archaeology represents the life work of the late Professor Brian Shefton, who sadly died in January 2012. In his memory, Newcastle University has established a fund to celebrate Professor Shefton’s outstanding contribution to the study of Greek and Etruscan art and archaeology.
Brian B. Shefton came to Newcastle University in 1955 as a lecturer and remained here for the rest of his career, becoming Professor of Greek Art and Archaeology in 1979. Upon his retirement in 1984, he was appointed Emeritus Professor and an Honorary Fellow in 2005. During Professor Shefton’s long and illustrious career, he was elected as a Fellow of the British Academy and received its Kenyon medal for Classical Studies and Archaeology.
A distinguished classical scholar, Professor Shefton’s most significant achievement was the establishment of the Shefton Collection of Greek and Etruscan Archaeology. From an initial £25 grant, Professor Shefton built up a collection of almost a thousand objects to enrich teaching and research at Newcastle University.
Today, the collection is housed in the Shefton Gallery at the Great North Museum, named after Professor Shefton to commemorate his 90th birthday. The museum collection is complemented by a library collection of over 2,000 volumes, which is held in the University’s Robinson Library. Together, the Shefton artefact and library collections provide rich resources for scholarship and engagement on classical archaeology and art.
Newcastle University is honouring Professor Shefton’s lifetime contribution to classical scholarship through the Brian B. Shefton Memorial Fund. This will help students and scholars access invaluable resources for the study of classical archaeology and art.
