We pioneer life-saving cancer research to help us beat cancer

Story

On 9 July 2022, We again hosted MAXFEST in the garden of Blacksmiths Arms. It was a tremendous day well supported by over 250 people.

We played football (average age 45-60) against an under 18 team from Lowlands fc. Was a great day and a fabulous money spinning event.

MAXFEST 2021 will be going ahead on October 16 in the Blacksmith Arms garden, 6 live bands including the incredible STARK.

MAXFEST 2019 will be held on Saturday 21 September, in the bull car park Bracebridge heath. 6 live bands, DJ set and DJ inside from 21.00. Festival hair, face painting and barbecue. Come enjoy and support us.

Our next big event will be held on Saturday 8 September at Oakridge Arena, Collingham. It is a music festival - MAXFEST 8:9 local bands with overnight camping available. Will be an excellent day. And night.

Our 5th Annual Golf and Fun Day Was held  at Canwick Park Golf Club, Sunday 27 May 2018. It was a great event - with the Auction, we raised almost 3k.

LATEST FUNDRAISER 12 - 16 October - Saharan Challenge

On 13 & 14 October 2017, Simon Miles & Paul Jones (PJ) will be attempting (the crazy feat) of completing 2 marathons in 2 days through the Sahara Desert, Morocco. "Why on earth, would you do that!!" I hear you say. To raise money for Cancer Research UK, in memory of and to support Max White's legacy. Max battled with Kidney, Liver & Bone Cancer for 18 months, during this time he suffered discomfort and pain every day. But he faced it with Courage and dignity, a lesson in life to us all. This is a very tough and draining challenge, a fitting tribute to his memory.

Max's story .........

On16 Dec 2013 Max was told the devastating news that he had Kidney Cancer.Following further tests, scans and a biopsy it was found that the cancerhad already spread to his liver and more crucially to his bones, defininghis condition as Stage 4 advanced and therefore inoperable and incurable.

Max's treatment plan did not involve surgery, instead he was immediately offeredpalliative radiotherapy to relieve pain in his spine before being put on a formof TKI Chemotherapy called Sutent. After 4 full cycles of this drug (around 6months) his treatment was stopped as he had to undergo 2 minor operations toremove some rather painful abscesses. During this period off the medication ascan revealed small signs of progression in the liver so it was time to reviewthe treatment plan. After a failed attempt to get onto a new trial drug at TheRoyal Marsden (got the wrong type of kidney cancer!) a new drug wasadministered in September 2014 called Axitinib. The side effects began to settle down after a few weeks and a scan was set for before Xmas 2014 to establish a further benchmark.

December 2014 results were delivered by a new consultant, Dr Roy Vergis who is covering maternity leave for Dr Amanda Clarke until Sept 2015. The results were positive in that they showed no further spread or significant growth of cancer over the past 6 months meaning that Axitinib was doing its job!! Max was able to look forward to a positive Xmas with his family and continue with the treatment plan until his next review in April 2015.

April 2015 - Another visit to see the consultant, Dr Vergis and the scan results were showing that, in the whole, things were remaining stable with one or two areas that needed constant monitoring. However the good news is that treatment continues so that will mean a 9th, 10th and 11th cycle on Axitinib before the next review at the end of June and Max can continue to manage the known side effects of this treatment he understands so well.

Max continued to 'Live life to the Max' despite the challenges he faced through his illness as well as dealing with the ongoing side effects caused by the treatment.

Sadly Max succumbed to his illness on August 17 2015. He died peacefully in Hospital with his Daughter, Mother and Brother by his side. I myself was at his side for his final moments.

We continue to raise Money for this deserving cause in Max name, his Legacy is so very important to us all.

Breakthroughs are being made every day so we want to raise as much money as we can for Cancer Research UK Ltd to support their tremendous work in understanding and beating this illness sooner rather than later, ensuring more & more people beat cancer in the future and may even one day, become a thing of the past.

Thankyou for visiting our page and reading this information - any help or supportyou can offer will be appreciated by me, Max and all those close to him.
