Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. I need your support! The Marathon des Sables is an Ultra Marathon, one of the toughest in the world, 250km over 6 days in the Sahara Desert. I want to try and do something incredible, something which will 'earn' the support of everyone, and so help everyone I know donate the maximum they can to support the charitable fund to build and equip a new facility in Oswestry for the UK Veterans' Orthopaedic Service.
I joined the Royal Army Medical Corps in 1983, and I am humbled to have served my country and community in a very small way. I have also been lucky enough to have worked in the Orthopaedic industry for 30 years - equipped with skills and values from the RAMC. Many of our veterans leave the Armed Services needing specialist Orthopaedic Care, often having suffered serious physical and mental injury.
In 2013 Lt Col Carl Meyer set up The Veterans Orthopaedic Service at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Knowing there was incredible need, to see patients who had long term conditions requiring specialist care. Since then the service has had over 2419 patient consultations, with an extensive waiting list to see more. There are over 5 million Veterans living in the UK alone, so we know there are more that need help. A new bespoke Veterans' Orthopaedic Centre is to be built on site, the dedicated building is due for completion in 2022. The aim is to provide a service that truly supports Veterans in the way they should expect and deserve. This fund aims to enhance the continued development of this service.
Thank you so much for all you can give, small or large. Si & Nics.
