Story

Thanks for visiting our fundraising page.

To all those who supported our trip to Uganda in November 2008...

Firstly, a very BIG thank you for your interest, support, and sponsorship towards this trip. It was a great success.  We all managed to keep relatively fit and healthy throughout and so could dedicate our time to the tasks in hand.

We have (literally) 1000's of photos from the trip but here is a link to just a few that show quite clearly what was achieved in a fairly short time and also some of what your contributions enabled us to provide for the very needy pupils and staff of the school.

ServeUganda will maintain this relationship with the Wobulenzi Town Academy (WTA) and the surrounding area. With much work still to do there the planning for the next trip in 2009 is already underway!

For those who live locally to Romsey we will be organising a feedback evening in the near future for anyone who is interested in seeing more photos and finding out more details of this trip. I will keep you posted on the date and venue. You may even want to consider joining a similar trip in the future?!

Thank you again very much for your support,

Neil & Simon

P.S. As you can see we were fortunate enough to raise slightly more than our target - any additional money donated on this site will go directly towards extra equipment & supplies for the school in Uganda.

For those of you who are visiting this webpage for the first time, this is what we set out to do.........

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Neil Kirkland and Simon Bramwell, work colleagues at NXP Semiconductors Southampton, are joining a team to help refugee children in Uganda.

In 2006, Simon went to Wobulenzi and built a house with a team from Habitat for Humanity. The house was on the site of  Wobulenzi Town Academy, a school for refugees from war-torn North Uganda. The needs of the children there have motivated the team to return, this time to help the children directly.

Secondary schools in Uganda are not funded by the state, so all education beyond 11 has to be paid for by the students' families. But the families of the children at Wobulenzi Town Academy have barely any means of paying. Sometimes they pay by giving a little food, other times they cannot pay anything. The result is that school is barely able to provide accommodation, let alone proper educational equipment.  Yet the volunteer teachers at the school are providing a core curriculum up to O-level standard to try to give the children a chance to make a better life for themselves. While we are there the teachers will take a few days' paid employment to alleviate their needs.

You can see photos of the school here:

Neil and Simon are joining the team of 16 people from 30 October to 12 November, to help the children by:

- carrying out repair work at the school, decorating, building work
- providing some much-needed school equipment, such as books and othere educational materials.
- teaching some Maths and Science (to O-level standard)
- encouraging the children to make a better future for themselves

The essential costs for the trip (travel and accomodation) are covered, so any money you donate will contribute directly to the team goal of helping the children by providing the following:

     Sports equipment for school £500
Text books and library books for school £250
     Paint & painting equipment £400
     New roof for school £1000
Windows & doors for school £1200
Concrete for new floors for school £350
General building equipment incl mixer hire etc £300
     Scientific equipment for school £250
New ceilings for staffroom and headmasters office £200
Milling machine for school as sustainable business project £1500
Higher protein food for school – 1 term for all students £500
Wipe boards and markers for classrooms £300

The thermometer above represents money we have raised towards the team effort.

Please consider giving generously.
