On 4th October, I will be running in my first half marathon to raise money for Rett UK, an amazing charity that does incredible work for individuals and their families affected by Rett syndrome.

Rett syndrome is a neurological disorder affecting mainly females and some males. Although present at birth, it is usually undetected until major regression, when children will lose acquired skills - this can be accompanied by distress and anxiety. Communication and mobility are often severely affected. Epilepsy, scoliosis and breathing difficulties are also common. Due to the profound physical and learning difficulties associated with this condition, people affected are totally reliant upon others for support throughout their lives. 

Rett UK supports families living with Rett syndrome from the point of diagnosis and throughout the many challenges they face. Over the past couple of years, Rett UK has helped me in a research project and through this process I have been lucky enough to meet some wonderful families that are affected by Rett syndrome - their unrelenting optimism and resilience is inspirational. Raising money for Rett UK is my way of giving something back to them and their families.
