The Keep Me Close Appeal - providing a home from home experience for families of sick and premature babies requiring Neonatal Intensive Care.

Story

I am taking part in a charity skydive (which is honestly terrifying for me) on 22 May 2022 to thank Derriford Hospital, particularly the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) who cared for me, my son Finn and my husband Oliver so well during an incredibly difficult time.

Here is our story:

In April 2021 I was admitted to hospital at 34 weeks pregnant due to suspected pre-eclampsia. I suffered a placental abruption, where the placenta detaches from the wall of the uterus. This meant my baby was no longer receiving blood from my body, and I was bleeding significantly. At this point we were both in danger. Due to the rapid action of the maternity team, I was rushed to have a c-section under general anaesthetic. Finn was delivered just 15 minutes after the abruption had been identified. A neonatal consultant was present and Finn was admitted to neonatal intensive care (NICU) 5 minutes later. Weighing 4lb 8oz (about 2kg) and unwell, Finn spent 2 weeks in NICU before moving to the transitional care ward with me for another week. The support we had from a huge team of people was incredible, and thanks to their care and attention our wonderful little boy is filling our lives with joy.

How will your donation be used:

The NICU has a facility for parents who don’t live locally to stay near their baby. It is funded purely from donations. While Oliver and I did not need to use this as we live close to the hospital, I understand how important this is for other parents in our situation. Please help me to thank Derriford and NICU for the support we received by donating!

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails.
