Story

Hi everyone,

I've been talking about doing this for quite a while now and finally, I need to actually walk the talk (pardon the pun!). So welcome to my Just Giving page to support my marathon-busting 184 mile walk!

I am doing the walk as a fundraiser for The Salvation Army. This is because we will be moving as a family to the College in August when I begin my own training to become a Salvation Army Officer - following my calling! And I want to  make sure that others can do the same!  The monies raised will be distributed as follows:

50% of the total monies will go to The Candidates Fund which helps those who are exploring their calling to officership of the SA or are working towards it but may not have sufficient resources to do so.50% of the total monies will go to Failsworth Salvation Army to help fund the great work that we do in the community in Failsworth and beyond. So why 184 miles (it's very specific)?

And that's because it is the equivalent of the distance from my home Salvation Army of Failsworth, to William Booth Training College in London.

How will it be done?

Originally, I was going to walk the actual 184 mile route staying over at different locations on the way, but logistically this is really difficult for us at the moment. So, instead I am going to walk a certain amount of miles everyday, following a route which means something to me - a pilgrimage of sorts. The trek will consist of a walk around the 41-mile Oldham borough border (aka The Oldham Way) in recognition of my love of my hometown, a walk north, east, south and west from the Salvation Army Hall in Failsworth in recognition of the calling which could take me anywhere in the world, a walk around the border of Failsworth in recognition of my home corps (and this will be a prayer walk), a walk to all the places I have lived over my 39 years, a walk around each of the Salvation Army Churches in the Oldham Borough in recognition of the Army's work and finally the last day of the walk will see me go from Watford to the College at Denmark Hill (and collapse probably!!) The breakdown is as follows:

22 July 2017: Day one of the Oldham Way Walk (17 miles)23 July 2017: Day two of the Oldham Way Walk (24 miles)24 July 2017: Walk north from the Army Hall and back (15 miles)25 July 2017: Walk east from the Army Hall and back (15 miles)26 July 2017: Walk south from the Army Hall and back (15 miles)27 July 2017: Walk west from the Army Hall and back (15 miles)28 July 2017: Walk the places that I have lived (15  miles) 29 July 2017: Walk the boundary of Failsworth - prayer walk (14 miles)30 July 2017: Walk around the Salvation Armys in Oldham (15 miles31 July 2017: TBC depending on how many miles I still need to cover1 August 2017: Watford to William Booth College (20 miles)And the best bit - I would love for you to join me if you can! I will keep my schedule up to date and if you want to join me for any part of the walks, that would be great. With the exception of the 22 and 23 July I will look to set off from Failsworth Salvation Army at about 9am and finish early afternoon (15 miles should take between 3.5 and 4 hours) and I will be stopping regularly for a break and something to eat and drink. I will post my exact route shortly in advance on this page.
How will you be able track my progressI will take a beginning picture and end picture everyday showing the distance and route that I have completed. I will also post a blog each day to share any interesting bits of the walks each day - as well as any inspirations I have. The blog site is: https://whomshallyousend.wordpress.com/

Thanks for reading this and please make a donation of whatever you feel you can - and if you pay tax you can Gift Aid it too!
